One thing you have to remember about AJFA is that this is the first full album after the death of Cliff Burton. There is an intense emotional depth to this album, a backlash against the workings of the universe, a furious scream against the unfairness of life, that things aren't "just. " Anger is mixed with sadness along with an unmistakable knowledge that all cannot be controlled. Horrible things happen for no reason at all. This album is an intense wringing of Metallica's soul, and I just don't see that equaled, to this extent, by the other albums, no matter how great they are.
Even though the bass is strangely excised, this album is an artistic, aesthetic, musical masterpiece, equivalent to a symphony, with movements and a specific motif -- the (in)justice of humanity, within and without. This is Metallica's title shot at dethroning "Dark Side of the Moon" as greatest concept album ever. Nuff said!
This album has ONE.... the single greatest song of all time. Of course thats not the only great song on that album, but its enough to put it up there!
Ajfa rocks hard. It has lyrics with something to say, matched with great guitar work. It has lars at his rocking best.
One is the greatest song ever but this album has plenty of other gems too. St. Anger can NOT beat this album
this album has arguably the heaviest and best songs metallica has to offer
Raw Thrash
